Warren HarrisThere are lots of reasons to get active in an alumni organization – but the best one is easy to define. Simply put, our organization is a great way to surround yourself with classmates, friends and colleagues who share an enduring bond with a superior law school.

Later this month, your UH Law Alumni Association will host its Annual Law Gala and Auction. Please do NOT think of this as “just another party.” This major event brings together the largest collection of Law Center alumni you will see during the year, and there’s a good chance you will bump into someone (or several someones) who can make this a truly fun and memorable evening.

The chair for this year’s Law Gala and Auction is Laura Gibson ’85, and she and her corps of volunteers are putting together a great event under the banner of “Silver and Gold – Celebrating Friends New and Old.” (She is working with alums who want to put together a table of classmates, and I encourage you to contact her via email for details on the special rate we are offering for class tables this year.)

Set your calendars for 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 24th, at the Hilton of the Americas in downtown Houston. And if you need one last motivation to RSVP, consider this: our Law Gala and Auction is the single largest fundraising event that supports the Law Center. For the cost of a ticket or table, you can enjoy a terrific evening of entertainment – and know that the proceeds are giving a much-needed jolt to the balance sheet of the Law Center.

Do NOT put this off! Please click here to RSVP, and make plans to join us on April 24th.

I should mention that our events like the Law Gala and Auction always attract leading members of the judiciary who have a special affinity for our school. Last week, 10 judges attended a reception I hosted to encourage more Law Center students to pursue judicial clerkships. Joining us were United State District Judges Lynn Hughes and Gray Miller; First Court of Appeals’ Chief Justice Sherry Radack and Justices Terry Jennings, Evelyn Keyes, Laura Higley, and Michael Massengale; and Fourteenth Court of Appeals’ Chief Justice Adele Hedges and Justices Bill Boyce and Tracy Christopher – and every one of them spoke forcefully about the power that judicial clerkships can exert on a legal career. FYI, we’re making a big push to keep Law Center graduates in these important posts, and much credit goes to Yvonne Ho ’06 and her dedicated Judicial Clerkships committee members for their tireless efforts.

See you at the Law Gala & Auction on Saturday, April 24th!
