I have always believed that the Law Center has an outstanding teaching faculty, so I am especially pleased to see this recognized by others. Three leading examples are Clinical Professor Geoff Hoffman and Professors Meredith Duncan and Sapna Kumar.
The American Immigration Lawyers Association has selected Professor Hoffman to receive the 2014 Elmer Fried Excellence in Teaching Award. Hoffman joined the Law Center faculty in 2009. Geoff teaches immigration and asylum law and directs the Immigration Clinic where he supervises students and staff attorneys in pro bono immigration-related federal court litigation, deportation defense, asylum cases, and appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals. He has served as counsel or co-counsel in more than 40 appellate and trial court cases, including in a precedent-setting immigration case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Professor Duncan, a Law Center graduate in the Class of ’93 and faculty member since 1998, is featured in the book “What the Best Law Teachers Do.” Co-authored by three law professors and published by Harvard University Press, the book is a unique attempt to determine why these teachers are so highly regarded in the classroom. Candidates were nominated by students and peers, interviewed by the authors, visited in their classrooms, reviewed by their students, and evaluated for their scholarship. Meredith will discuss teaching related issues and techniques at a follow-up conference in late June at Northwestern University School of Law.
Last but surely not least, Professor Kumar, who joined the faculty in 2009, is a recipient of the provost-sponsored University Teaching Excellence Award. This is a University-wide award given each year to a few select members of the faculty following a rigorous application and evaluation process. Sapna has also been honored as the Student Bar Association’s “Faculty of the Year” after a vote of the entire Law Center student body.
I know you will join me in congratulating Geoff, Meredith and Sapna – three among many in the ranks of the Law Center faculty deserving of such honors.Richard M. Alderman
