UHLC mock trial team wins National Trial Advocacy Competition

The Law Center team of Janan Sharaf, left, Mark Gonzalez, Barira Munshi, and Travis Holland share a victory moment with Judge Joseph J. Farah of Michigan’s 7th Circuit Court after winning the national competition.

Oct. 12, 2015 – The University of Houston Law Center mock trial team argued its way to victory over 15 of the country’s best teams this weekend to claim the championship in the National Trial Advocacy Competition.

The team of Travis Holland, Barira Munshi, Mark Gonzalez, and Janan Sharaf defeated Duquesne, Georgetown, SMU, Brooklyn, and St. Mary's on the way to claiming their trophy in the invitational tournament held in Lansing, MI. The team was coached by UHLC alums Jackie Houlette ‘93, Julie Gray ‘04, both of Houlette-Gray, and Megan Daic ’13, of Brown, Wharton & Brothers.

The team tried a murder case in which a 17-year-old was accused of killing his step-father and half-brother. The defense argued the defendant confessed to protect his mother, who he claimed was the actual murderer.

The tournament was sponsored by the Michigan State Bar's Young Lawyers Section.
