UHLC community celebrates season with spirit and songs


Dec. 10, 2015 – Faculty and staff of the University of Houston Law Center welcomed the winter holidays  at their annual party Friday with food, contests, a raffle, and rousing renditions of seasonal songs.

“As we prepare for the holidays this is a great time to reflect on all the gifts we received this year,” said Dean Leonard M. Baynes.

The musical performances were led by Associate Dean Marcilynn Burke, Elaine Fiala, executive secretary of the Health Law & Policy Institute, Kristen Guiseppi, manager of the pre-law pipeline program, and Baynes with Stephen Schad, at the keyboard.

Guest performances included Assistant Professor Jessica Mantel, co-director of the Health Law & Policy Institute Jessica Mantel who sang “I Have a Little Dreidel” in celebration of Hanukkah.

Additional festivities included of an ugly hat contest won for the second time by Jim Lawrence, director of the Blakely Advocacy Center, who wore a creation he called “Under the Constitution,” a holiday-themed constitutional law book perched atop his head and adorned with beads, dreadlocks, and a shark. The ugly sweater contest was won by Erma Bonadero, director of the externship program, who wore a purple sweater with festive frogs.

The planning committee consisted of Bonadero, Fiala, Guiseppi, Assistant Clinical Professor Lauren Simpson, Pilar Mensah and Liz Clearman, associate directors of admissions, Kate Gigliotti, external affairs director of events, and Amanda Parker, an executive secretary .

There was also a raffle for all those who donated canned goods and other items. All the donations will be given to Bay Area Turning Point, an organization that provides recovery services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and facilitates violence prevention strategies for societal change in partnership with our community.

The winners of the raffle were Thelma Baines, clinical program manager, Luddie Collins, secretary in the dean’s office and Tiffany J. Tucker, associate director of the career development office.
