Jan. 22, 2016 – University of Houston Law Center Professor Jessica Mantel on Jan. 27 will discuss a relatively new trend in health care — health care providers growing interest in addressing the social and environmental conditions affecting a patient’s health rather than focusing on medical treatment.
Mantel, co-director of the Law Center’s Health Law & Policy Institute, will speak as part of the university’s APEX (Assistant Professor Excellence) Speaker Series. Her presentation is titled: “Providers’ Central Role in Tackling the Social Determinants of Health.”
Addressing the impact of social factors on health has primarily been left to government agencies and community organizations, she says. But certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act and state Medicaid programs encourage health care providers to place a greater emphasis on social issues that lead to poor health.
Mantel will explore the merits of this new approach to health care and its implications for providers, regulators, and educators.
Her presentation will be from 12:15 – 1:15, Wednesday, Jan. 27, in room 328 of the Classroom and Business Building (UCBB). Brown bag lunches are welcome.
