UH Law’s 40th Annual Gala Toasts Texas, raises $400,000

University of Houston Law Center alumni honored their own at the 40th Annual Law Gala & Auction for outstanding service to the school, community, and legal profession. April 7, 2016 -- The Texas stars were shining bright when the University of Houston Law Center held its 40th Annual Law Gala and Auction at the Westin Houston Memorial City on April 2 with the theme “Texas Under the Stars.”

More than 400 guests filled the hotel’s Azalea Ballroom, bedecked with deep blue lighting and hammered copper and cowhide accents surrounded by lush flowers, to honor outstanding faculty and alumni of the Law Center, including Jim Roach ’82, Senior U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider, The Honorable Vanessa D. Gilmore ’81, Tom Godbold ’82, Ann Ryan Robertson ’77, The Honorable Terry Jennings ’88, The Honorable Mike Engelhart ’95, Anna M. Archer ’06, former UH System Regent Jarvis V. Hollingsworth ’93, The Honorable George C. Hanks, Jr., William J. Jackson ’92, Linda Glover ’01 and Jacqueline Moy ’01,
The Honorable Reece Rondon ’95 chaired the 40th Annual Law Gala with his wife Andria Rondon.

Dean Leonard M. Baynes, used the occasion to talk about the recent success of the Law Center in national rankings and how his vision for the “Power of Legal Education” impacts alumni and students of the Law Center.

After the awards presentations, auctioneer Vincent J. Montalbano, performed a lively “Paddles Up” speed fundraiser where attendees were encouraged to donate on the spot. The “Paddles Up” and “Silent Auction” auction raised over $50,000 and the overall event raised nearly $400,000, which will fund scholarships, advocacy programs, faculty research, student organizations, library acquisitions, technology advances, student recruitment, and other student activities at the Law Center. The auction was co-chaired by Cynthia Mabry ’10 and Michelle Gray ’11.

Following the auction, attendees enjoyed a private concert performance by Austin band, Reckless Kelly.
