University of Houston Law Center 1L students took a break from their studies to receive congratulations for excelling in the Fall 2017 semester.

March 8, 2018 — More than 60 first-year University of Houston Law Center students were honored at the third annual Academic Achievement Reception on Tuesday in the Hendricks Heritage Room.

"You're in the top 30 percent after your first semester," Dean Leonard M. Baynes said in his welcoming remarks. "It's very important for us as an institution to congratulate you and celebrate you. Being in the top 30 percent is a really big milestone and it opens up a lot of opportunities for you for journals, law review, moot court, mock trial, and a lot of other things.

"But I want to tell you -- don't get too comfortable. The rest of the class wants to be in your position. I've seen a lot of times when people do very well in the first semester and they get bypassed in the second semester."

Bilma Canales, a 3L student who will graduate in May, offered words of encouragement to her 1L schoolmates.

"You survived your first semester of law school and you've done well," she said. "Just know that you've succeeded before and you can do it again. As 1Ls, you're in a position where you can do whatever you want to do with your careers. Embrace that, and I urge you to never tell yourself no. Just go for it."
