Scholarly excellence of UH Law Center students praised during Dean's Awards

The 2018 edition of the Dean's Awards in Krost Hall recognized 65 scholarship recipients, 64 LEX Awards winners and 21 2018 Summer Public Interest Fellows.

The 2018 edition of the Dean's Awards in Krost Hall recognized 65 scholarship recipients, 64 LEX Awards winners and 21 2018 Summer Public Interest Fellows.

April 23, 2018 - Dean Leonard M. Baynes honored University of Houston Law Center students Tuesday for their achievements in the classroom during the Dean's Award Ceremony in Krost Hall.

"We try to make sure that we honor our students and congratulate them as much as we possibly can," Baynes said in his welcoming remarks. "We all know law school is hard, but we also know that many of you have worked very hard to accomplish great things."

Associate Dean for Student Affairs Sondra Tennessee served as master of ceremonies, and handed out awards and scholarships to more than 60 students for their academic excellence and commitment to specific areas of law.

LEX awards were given to 64 students who earned the highest grade in their first-year courses. Twenty-one students were named 2018 Summer Public Interest Fellows, and will participate in summer internships at non-profit, public interest agencies and government offices.

The following faculty and staff were also commended for their service during the 2017-2018 school year:

  • Meredith J. Duncan, the George Butler Research Professor of Law, was awarded the 2018 Ethel M. Baker Faculty Award.
  • Luana Gearing, was given the 2018 Staff Award.
  • Professor Douglas K. Moll received the 2018 Order of the Barons Professor of the Year Award.
  • Associate Professor Gina S. Warren was named the 2018 Student Bar Association Professor of the Year (Full-time).
  • Clinical Assistant Professor Lauren J. Simpson was awarded the 2018 Student Bar Association Professor of the Year (Part-time).
