The memorial reception in the Hendricks Heritage Room was sponsored by the Law Center and Houston's Wednesday Tax Forum of which he was a long-time member and former president.

Speakers included Law Center Dean Leonard M. Baynes, Professor William Streng and Associate Professor Bret Wells, both tax law colleagues, and Ted Hirtz, representing the Forum.

They praised Shepard's decades-long expertise in the ever-evolving field of tax law and his ability to convey that knowledge to thousands of students. Others shared memories of his warmth, kindness and sense of humor.

The tax law faculty, with the support of Shepard's widow, Rosemary, has established the Ira B. Shepard Memorial Fund to provide financial support to ongoing activities of the school's tax law program.
