AIRPORTS

Houston is the only U.S. city with two airports rated "4-star or better" by Skytrax: Intercontinental (IAH) and Hobby (HOU).  Which one you pick may depend on your carrier preference, the cost of air fare on different lines, the location of the airports in relation to the Hilton-Américas, and/or other factors.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport

IAH (now named after former U.S. President George H.W. Bush), the larger of the two airports, is located 23 miles (37 km) north of Downtown Houston.  It is the tenth-busiest airport in North America in terms of total passengers and the seventh-largest international passenger gateway in the United States.  IAH is dominated by United Airlines, but it serves all other major domestic carriers and most major international carriers as well.  All five terminals, including a new international terminal, are connected by an automated people-mover and underground train.  Options for transportation to Downtown include:

Taxis from IAH.   The fare from IAH to downtown is approximately $52.

Uber and Lyft.  Both are available at designated pick-up spots.

Car Rentals.  IAH offers all the usual suspects.

Shuttles and Hotel Courtesy Vans.  For fare quotes and reservations, click on www.supershuttle.com or www.airportshuttles.com.  Approximate cost: $20 each way.

Public Metro Buses.  Frankly, a long, dull trip and requires some walking downtown, but . . .  Bus route 102 serves IAH and downtown locations.  Service runs Monday through Sunday, from approximately 5 a.m. until midnight.  To check schedules and plan your trip, click here:

William P. Hobby Airport

HOU, the closer-in and more manageable of the two airports, is locate 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Downtown Houston.  It is the third-largest airport in its classification, behind only St. Louis and Nashville.  HOU is dominated by relatively low-priced Southwest Airlines (those averse to open seating should remember that checking in 24 hours in advance ensures access to the great majority of the seats on a Southwest flight), but is served also by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and JetBlue Airways.  Options for transportation to Downtown include:

Taxis from Hobby.  Taxis are available at Curb Zone 3 outside of the baggage claim area in the lower level.  The fare from Hobby to downtown is approximately $26.

Uber and Lyft.  Both are available at designated pick-up spots.

Car Rentals.  HOU offers all the usual suspects.

Shuttles and Hotel Courtesy Vans.  For fare quotes and reservations, click on www.supershuttle.com or www.airportshuttles.com. Approximate cost: $20 each way.

Public Metro Buses.   Honestly, not worth the trouble, given that the airport is so close-in to Downtown Houston and that other means of transport are relatively affordable.
