Call for Student Research Proposals (posted 04/14/2026)
AI-Intensive Constitutional Law Research Project
Proposals Due: April 26, 2026, 5:00 p.m.: schandler@uh.edu
I am seeking up to two students this summer for a special research project at the intersection of constitutional law and artificial intelligence. Although the special research project must comply with University of Houston Law Center requirements as stated in the student handbook, this is not just a conventional paper assignment. The project requires you to use AI tools at every stage of the work, from initial research through drafting through final production. The goal is to produce a serious piece of constitutional law scholarship alongside a suite of companion artifacts: a project website, an audio podcast episode, and a set of related teaching materials. Outstanding papers will be considered for a published anthology of student works I am hoping to publish in early 2027. (You can look at my Issues in Contemporary Constitutional Law. book for the 2026 version).
You choose your own constitutional law topic (negotiated with me) and develop an original thesis. Your proposal to me should be approximately 800 words and include three elements: (1) a clearly stated thesis grounded in constitutional doctrine, (2) a candid discussion of your prior experience with AI tools and how you plan to use them in this project, and (3) a description of the specific artifacts you propose to create alongside the paper.
Before submitting your proposal, you must use the Volokh My Claim AI tool to stress-test your thesis.
This project rewards ambition, creativity, and a willingness to experiment with new modes of legal scholarship.
