MESSAGE FROM
UH LAW FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
As I began my term as Foundation Board President,
uncertainty continued to exist regarding the pandemic
and our ability to gather safely. Despite these challenges,
the University of Houston Law Center continued to
advance its mission of educating the next generation of
legal minds. Our law professors were more productive
than ever, writing articles that were placed in top law
reviews and journals around the country, speaking at
conferences and ensuring that our students continued
to receive the best legal education. Meanwhile, through
the extraordinary efforts, of many we have witnessed on
our campus what some thought would never happen.
In what used to be a parking lot, the construction of the
John M. O’Quinn Law Building remains on schedule and
will be ready for our students in the upcoming school
year. I am excited to say that in a few short months, the
Law Center community will leave behind the Bates Law
Building, Teaching Unit II (TUII) and Krost Hall to step
into a new, world – class law building. That is a reason to
celebrate!
The past year has also brought a renewed focus on the
need for scholarships to stay competitive and recruit
outstanding students. Indeed, I am amazed at the
cost of a legal education today compared to when I
attended the Law Center. Dean Baynes’ Fuel the Future
Initiative is focused on raising funds to support law
student scholarships. I am pleased to report that we
have seen a surge of support for this initiative over the
TOM HETHERINGTON ’98 past year. Thanks to our many alumni and friends who
UH Law Foundation President have established new scholarships that are making a
difference in the lives of our law students. My wife and
I have long supported a scholarship at the Law Center
and have found it to be the most rewarding of our
philanthropic endeavors. I hope that some of you will
join us and consider “fueling the future.”
As we move into our beautiful new building, I hope to
see you at some of the many events that will take place to
commemorate the Law Center’s 75th Anniversary. Let’s
celebrate!!!
