| The University of Houston Law Center has reached an incredible milestone in the school’s history. I am happy to report that on August 22, 2019, the University of Houston System Board of Regents unanimously approved $78 million for construction of a new Law Center facility. The funding is derived from philanthropy and early support of law alumni and friends, a direct state appropriation from the Texas legislature, and the University of Houston System. This vote represents the culmination of a decades-long pursuit of a new building to match the academic excellence of the school. As I have said, “A world class institution in a world class city requires a world class building,” and we are now on a clear path to making this vision happen.
The new facility will afford cross-disciplinary training and project a dynamic image. It is planned to have the latest technology and flexible space to enhance the educational experience for students and faculty while also serving as a hub to engage and serve the public. The new facility will not only expand the educational capabilities of the Law Center, but boost its standing among the nation’s top law schools. It will increase the value of the Law Center degree for all graduates.
I commend the generosity of alumni donors and friends, the Texas legislature, and the University for making this significant development possible. The Law Center community and I are very grateful to the governor, the lieutenant governor, and state legislators. President Renu Khator, Provost Paula Myrick Short, Vice President Eloise Dunn Brice, and Vice President Jason Smith and the rest of the university leadership, and the board of regents made this long-held dream a reality with their bold and visionary leadership.
The board’s vote now moves us to Phase 3 of our campaign to raise the remaining $12 million needed to reach our goal of $90 million for construction of a state-of-the-art building.
How does Phase Three happen? It happens when alumni like you make a gift—large or small in the next two months. Every dollar that you give goes toward a bigger and better building. To make it easy here’s the link.
Sincerely,

Leonard M. Baynes Dean & Professor of Law
