| We
are experiencing an unprecedented health emergency. We are filled
with anxiety and concern for family and friends, but I know we will get
through this as a global community, nation and as members of the Law
Center family.
While
the world is looking for answers to deal with the unprecedented impact
of this pandemic, I can assure you that we are doing everything we can
to continue operations, protect the safety of our personnel and
students, and fulfill our mission of providing a quality legal
education.
As
you no doubt know, the Law Center faculty will be teaching remotely
from March 23 through at least April 4 when the situation will be
reevaluated. Students are being encouraged to stay at home. Health and
safety measures are in effect while a number of steps have been taken to
assure continuation of academic studies and student services.
Faculty
has been instructed on alternative means of delivering course material;
student outreach has been increased and counseling and psychological
services remain available; the UHLC bar prep course will be conducted
online; virtual employer networking and a potential virtual job fair are
being explored; and enhanced virtual alumni outreach is planned.
Given
the Center for Disease Control guidance about discouraging events over
10 people, all Law Center events through the end of April have been
cancelled. In addition, the 44th Annual GALA and Auction has been postponed until August 29. At that time, we will all come together to celebrate.
We have our eye on the immediate, but we are looking to the future. Be safe.
Sincerely,
Leonard M. Baynes Dean & Professor of Law
University of Houston Law Center
