The new U.S. News & World Report rankings were released. While rankings do not make a law school, this year’s metrics showcase the University of Houston Law Center’s areas of traditional excellence as well as some emerging strengths.
Overall, the Law Center improved its ranking to No. 58, up 2 spots from No. 60 last year, and now tied with two of our Texas peers, SMU Dedman School of Law and Baylor School of Law. The newly released rankings also showcase our longstanding top ten status in three specialty programs:
| • |
No. 6 in Intellectual Property |
| • |
No. 7 in Health Law |
| • |
No. 9 in Part-Time Programs |
Including the 3 programs ranked in the top ten, the Law Center has a total of 8 programs ranked in the top 50. These five other programs, with several making notable jumps, include Environmental Law (No. 21), Trial Advocacy (No. 31, an 11-point increase from 2021), Business and Corporate Law (No. 44, an eight-point increase from 2021), Dispute Resolution (No. 47, a five-point increase from 2021), and Tax Law (No. 49, a four-point increase from 2021).
Law.com also ranked the Law Center No. 27 in the “Go-To” law school rankings. These rankings are based on the employment success of the class of 2021 including those who secured associate attorney positions with the nation’s top 100 law firms. On this metric, the Law Center is the second-highest ranked law school in Texas, and this ranking is the Law Center’s highest since the inception of this metric in 2010.
In 2021, the Law Center was the only law school in the country recognized as a Diversity Champion by Insight into Diversity Magazine.
I am confident that the Law Center’s academic profile and reputation will continue to rise. First, in the next few months, we will transition our operations into the new John M. O’Quinn Law Building. That world class building will strategically position us to enhance the prominence of our world class faculty and world class city as well as help to attract more well credentialed students. Second, our Fuel the Future campaign to increase law student scholarships will enhance these efforts to recruit and retain the students with the strongest credentials helping us to boost two of the key ranking metrics—median GPA and median LSAT. Many thanks to all who have given. For those who haven’t given, there is still an opportunity. For more information, please visit https://www.law.uh.edu/giving/fuel-the-future.asp.
Rest assured wherever we may rank, we remain steadfast in maintaining our core values. The Law Center will continue to provide an excellent legal education to a diverse group of students to prepare them for fruitful careers. And we will continue to serve as a scholarly hub providing our faculty and students an environment to write publications and exchange ideas with each other and the broader legal community.
Sincerely,
