Law students meet with top government agencies and nonprofits during UHLC career fair

Feb. 14, 2024 — More than 50 local, state, and national government and nonprofit organizations gathered at the University of Houston Law Center to engage with students and recent graduates about employment and internship opportunities.

According to Bill Powers, the Director of Internship and Externship Programs at the UHLC, the Government and Public Interest Table Talk, or GPITT “brings together government agencies and nonprofits with students for internship and attorney positions.”

The first floor of the Law Center buzzed with activity on Friday, Jan. 26 as current and former students dressed in professional attire went from table to table to speak with representatives about potential opportunities in different legal practice areas throughout Texas.

Staff Attorney at Lonestar Legal Aid and UHLC alumnus Velimir Rasic (J.D. ‘08) said, “This event is important because it gives students the opportunity to explore different organizations in their community to gain legal experience. We are ready to see what this next generation has in store!”

Some of the government agencies that attended the career fair included the Travis County Attorney’s Office, the City of Houston Legal Department, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. Nonprofit organizations such as Earthjustice, the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program, and the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services were also present.

The UHLC’s next career development event, the Judicial Lunch-and-Learn, will take place on Friday, Feb. 16 in the Foundation Room at the UHLC from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will give students the chance to become familiar with the federal judiciary in Houston and Galveston.
