UHLC Black Law Students Association helps feed 350+ Houston families in need

March 07 2024 — The University of Houston Law Center’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) collaborated with the Foundation for Black Heritage and Culture in the “We Are One” Food Distribution to prepare and distribute meals to more than 350 families lacking access to basic, healthy, and nutritious foods in the Houston area. The service day was held in February.

“Our goal with this event was to spread awareness about the food crisis here in Third Ward and to encourage people to support and sponsor local nonprofit organizations like The Foundation for Black Heritage and Culture. It takes a village, and it’s our responsibility to help those who are in need, especially when they’re our neighbors and the problem is right here in our community,” said Dierra Mize, BLSA Community Service Chair at 3L at UHLC.

Collaboratively, BLSA students worked tirelessly to support and uplift the community, demonstrating how much a helping hand can achieve.

BLSA takes pride in its partnership with FBHC and how its students played a vital role in facilitating the distribution of food to families in need to ultimately contribute to the well-being of the community. This initiative aligns with their dedication to leveraging the talents and resources of BLSA members to promote professional competence, community service, and meaningful change in the local community.

The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at UHLC strives to increase the presence of culturally and socially responsible black law students, fostering academic excellence, professional development, and positive community contributions. The Foundation for Black Heritage & Culture (FBHC) is a community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Houston, Texas, dedicated to upholding, safeguarding, and promoting the rich heritage of African American culture through education, health equity, and cultural arts initiatives. Additionally, FBHC extends its mission by establishing programs tailored to support marginalized inner-city youth and economically disadvantaged families.
