"As a low-income immigrant and a first-generation law school student, the Pipeline Programs has helped and continued to help me achieve my legal career milestones: from interning at the Harris County Precinct One Office Commissioner Rodney Ellis’ Office in Houston to helping me prepare for the LSAT. In addition, I had the privilege of being mentored by a UHLC LL.M. student in 2018 and a practicing attorney in 2019. I’ve made lifelong relationships through the program with fellow social justice peers and attorneys I’ve met along the way. Without the support of the Program, I wouldn’t be here today to proudly say I’ll be attending the City University of New York – School of Law this fall.”

“The National Black Law Students Association’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. To increase the number of Black attorneys, we must first increase the number of Black law students. SWBLSA is proud to partner with the UHLC Pre-Law Pipeline Programs because we know that this program will equip pre-law students with the necessary tools to gain admittance into law school, excel while there, and graduate and become successful attorneys.”

"This scholarship is a very generous and incredible gift because it gives me the resources to apply for law school. Being that I am a low-income, first-generation student, I do not have the monetary funds to apply for law school at the moment. This scholarship would allow me to focus on my last year of college and the law school application cycle without worrying about paying for the LSAT and my college applications."

"Since 2018, The University of Houston Prelaw Pipeline Programs has offered me the opportunity to gain early exposure into the legal field. The program has provided me with the opportunity to take part in internships with the Juvenile Capitol Advocacy Project and Dena Fisher Law Office. I also was able to gain a network of lifelong friends and meet people from all over the world with the same aspirations of pursuing a career in law. The Scholar II track prepared me for the LSAT with weekly classes, tests, and workshops dedicated to the law school application process. In the fall I will be attending Southern University Law Center while having the honor of being the recipient of the 1L Book Award Scholarship. I am more than grateful for the University of Houston Pre-law Pipeline Programs because it has contributed to my experiences, allowed me to grow in my passions of becoming an attorney, and helped me obtain valuable skills that I will carry with me to law school."

"The University of Houston Law Center Pipeline Programs changed my life for the better. I was enriched by the academic rigor as well as the relationships I built with my fellow cohort members and mentors. Over the course of the program, my LSAT score improved by 23 points when I only had anticipated a 6 to 7 point gain. On a daily basis, the Pipeline Programs introduced my cohort and I to highly acclaimed legal professionals that believed in us and wanted to see people that look like us succeed. It was inspirational and spiritually cultivating to see people who sat where we were sitting once before now sitting in general counsels of big law firms and having their own practices. With that as my goal, this scholarship will provide me with the necessary tools to embark on law school studies and I remain forever grateful for the opportunity!"

“The University of Houston Law School’s Pre-Law Pipeline Programs has been an incredible experience for my growth and development. As a member of the Scholar II track, I received top tier LSAT preparation, professional mentorship from several practicing attorneys, judges, and law school representatives, and personalized professional skills training. During my time with the program, I was encouraged, challenged, and inspired to reach my goals and achieve an LSAT score that would be beneficial to my law school journey. With the help and guidance of my instructor, mentors, and peers, I achieved that goal. By the end of this eight-week experience, I had successfully completed the July LSAT, 90% of my law school application, and a professional training program that was both incredibly informative and inspiring. The tools and skills I acquired while in Houston allowed me the privilege of submitting my applications early, and the honor of being awarded a scholarship to each of the law schools I was ultimately accepted to. [...] If it weren’t for the Pipeline Programs, I would not be as well prepared, confident, or excited to start my legal journey with the tools and skills I now have in my possession”

"Before this scholarship I was very unsure as to how I could afford to pay for law school expenses. My parents weren’t in the position to help me out and I have always been the one to help them out emotionally and financially. I had a very clear goal of attending law school and becoming a successful lawyer however, the road to getting there was very unclear. Growing up in Brownsville, Texas and being on track to becoming a first-generation law student put me at a slight disadvantage and even though I worked hard towards my goal every day; I was afraid that in the end financial struggles would hold me back. This Fellowship will give me the opportunity to attend and apply to many law schools that will ultimately be the best fit for me instead of narrowing down my scope. There is now a clear road ahead of me with no obstacles holding me back. This financial help means the world to me and I will utilize it effectively towards my dream of becoming a medical malpractice, healthcare and/or real estate lawyer. I am also very grateful to be acquiring more mentorship. The law school application process can be overwhelming but having that extra help and guidance will put me on a great, clear, path to success. All in all, I am honored to have gotten the opportunity to interview for this Fellowship and even more ecstatic that I am now a 2021 SWWC fellow. I know I will make this organization proud now and continuously in the future."

"When I think about the long journey ahead that leads to becoming an effective lawyer, I often feel intimidated. I find it hard to imagine how I will overcome the challenging classes, financial problems, LSAT, BAR exam and other steps it takes in order to become a lawyer. This scholarship has provided me with not only the motivation to take one step at a time, but it also provided the support system that is needed to do so. It has really impacted my life as it has set a solid foundation for me to start off of by covering the LSAT fees, college applications, and UH Pre-Law Pipeline Scholars II Program. This scholarship moved me to take on this journey with confidence and a determined mindset despite the challenges that I may face. The scholarship has provided opportunities for me that I once dreamed of but did not have the means to meet. Now I am able to spend more time focusing on my goal of becoming a law student, and soon after a lawyer, through the opportunities you all have provided. Additionally, this scholarship will continue to allow me to be the change I hope to see in the law field. I look forward to passing on the advice and support that I have received from this scholarship."

"The scholarship contribution by the SWBLSA award will impact me in ways I cannot foresee, but what I do know right now is that it has immensely eased a portion of my financial burden. The pandemic has impacted the number of hours I have been able to work, like many others during this time I have had to use the little I have been able to save in order to pay tuition and my other financial responsibilities. So, when I received word that was the recipient of the SWBLSA scholarship I was overjoyed, honored and extremely grateful for the opportunities that it will provide.

With this award I can focus all my efforts and energy towards staying abreast with my work during the academic rigor of the Pipeline Programs without having to fret that finances will prevent me from completing it. This scholarship not only helps me academically but personally as it will help me gain room to rebuild my financial footing for future rainy days."

"College has been an incredibly stressful time for me, as I have worked towards my goal of becoming a lawyer. There are many obstacles that I have encountered on the journey towards achieving my goal. These obstacles include challenging classes, financial problems, and a one-parent household to name a few. This scholarship has provided an immediate financial benefit and has positively impacted my mom and I. It has significantly relieved the financial obligation of the Pre-Law Pipeline Law Academy. It inspires me that this program leads by example, and I am looking forward to joining one of the finest law schools in the nation through the Pre-Law Pipeline Law Academy. A distant benefit the scholarship will provide is the foundation of law the Pipeline Programs will build to help me accomplish my goal to study family law. My future plan to practice family law will minimize the effects of family separations on children. I choose to work with children because they are the generation that will lead society in the coming years, and they need to be encouraged to inspire future generations. Additionally, this scholarship will continue to bolster my passion to be a microphone that amplifies youthful voices that often get lost and are seldom heard. While representing them, I look forward to the benefits of personal and professional growth all due to the direct as well as indirect measures of this scholarship."
