Course Outline: This course will introduce you to the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA") and its revised version under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), along with the emerging legal and commercial issues surrounding the treaty. Using a historical approach to regional trade, the course focuses on the evolution of the North American supply chain, its connection to other regional supply chains, and the ramifications of having (or not) a free trade agreement for the production supply-chains of the North American region. US trade law and policy as well as the fundamentals of international trade will be discussed, including dispute settlement, tariffs, rules of origin, and non-tariff barriers involving labor and environmental issues.

This course will have a final paper as the grade assessment which will meet the upper-level (WRS) writing requirement.

No pre-requisites are required for this course.

Contrary to the UH information, some student materials may not be available online, such as an assigned casebook. A physical classroom may be assigned for this course to give students a location in the Law Center to join the virtual class sessions. If the course has a final examination, the final and any other assessment for the course, such as a mid-term exam, will be conducted without the need to physically come to the Law Center, such as, for example, via the EBB portal as a take home exam or under remote proctoring.
