Ewer-Oren J.D. Health Law Writing Award
The Ewer-Oren J.D. Health Law Writing Award was established by Professor Emerita Laura Oren in
honor of two very special people. One is Dr. Michael Ewer, Law Center J.D. and LLM, Visiting Guest
Professor at the Law Center, Professor of Cardiology, and Special Assistant to the Vice President
at M.D. Anderson hospital. The other is her mother, the late Grace Oren, who dedicated her
career (paid and unpaid) to cerebral palsied children. The Writing Prize is to be awarded annually
to UHLC students who have written the excellent research papers in the field of Health Law.

Murray M. Nusynowitz Memorial Fund
This scholarship is in memory of Murray M. Nusynowitz, the UH Law Center’s
first assistant dean of admissions. He was a passionate recruiter, a great judge of
character, an ethical administrator, and a friend to all. This award is presented to
a law student who is active in the recruitment and admissions process.

Catherine Wright Memorial Scholarship
To honor the memory of Catherine Wright, Program Manager of the Law Center’s Career
Development Office (CDO) for more than a decade, this award is given to a student
who has exhibited compassion for others, demonstrated positive engagement within
the law community, and is active with the CDO and its programs and services.

J. Huey O’Toole Award
Awarded to a student of outstanding character who has exhibited
academic excellence in family law courses.

Houston Bar Association, Corporate Counsel Section Award
The purpose of the HBA Corporate Counsel Section is to promote the objectives and
standards of professionalism of the HBA within the field of corporate law. This scholarship
is awarded to a student with a strong interest in corporate/business law, as evidenced
by coursework and/or work experience and a strong academic performance.
