COVID-19 and Latin America: The Impact on the Inter-American System of Human Rights

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IASHR has provided a consistent level of protection throughout the Americas. The Inter-American Commission immediately intervened setting the basic protection standards to be upheld in the Region, and then installed its Rapid and Integrated Response Coordination Unit (SACROI, in the Spanish acronym) with the special focus on the right to health. The role and mission of the IASHR needs to be assessed in light of the social, economic and political context of the Americas, requiring a comparative approach combining domestic constitutional law and international law.
