UH Law to Host Information Session on the 2027 Legislative Fellowship Program Focused on Health

Sept. 4, 2026 — University of Houston Law Center students and recent graduates interested in shaping health policy can learn more about the Health Law & Policy Institute’s 2027 Legislative Fellowship Program, a paid six-month full-time experience at the Texas Capitol, at an information session on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
“The fellowship offers our students a unique opportunity to move beyond studying policy and become part of the legislative process itself,” said Jessica Mantel, director of the HLPI. “Whether participants pursue careers in law, government, healthcare or advocacy, they will leave Austin with a deeper understanding of how policy is developed and build a stronger foundation for their careers.”
The session, scheduled from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Room 100 in the John M. O’Quinn Law Building, will give prospective applicants an inside look at the fellowship which will place selected fellows with legislators’ offices or health-focused House or Senate committees during the 90th legislative session.
Fellows conduct policy research, draft briefing materials and contribute to the development of legislation affecting Texans across the state. They will have to live in Austin from January to June 2027 and will be paid a stipend of $5,166 per month.
A panel of former Legislative Fellows will share their experience working with legislators and committee staff and share what it’s like to navigate the fast-paced environment of the Texas Legislature. Institute representatives will also share details about the application process and answer audience questions. Boxed lunches will be provided for attendees.
The program is open to December 2025 and May 2026 UH Law Center graduates, Health LL.M. students and J.D. students with a demonstrated interest in health policy. Excellent research and writing skills are required.
Applications for the 2027 Legislative Fellowship are due September 30, 2026, and must be submitted through UHLC’s Symplicity.
