UH Law Center Earns A+ in National Jurist’s Health Law Honor Roll
– The University of Houston Law Center has received high marks in National Jurist’s newly released list of top law schools for Health Law. The publication gave UHLC an A+ and highlighted two new Health Law & Policy Institute initiatives that are expanding mentorship, networking and professional opportunities for students.
In an Oct. 1 article featuring leading health law programs, National Jurist singled out Friends of HLPI and the Kirk L. Dobbins American Health Law Association Travel Scholarship Award as examples of the Law Center’s growing opportunities for students.
“We are proud to see UHLC’s strength in health law recognized nationally, and especially pleased that National Jurist highlighted these new initiatives,” said HLPI Director Jessica Mantel. “A central part of our mission is connecting students with the health law community beyond the classroom, especially practitioners who can share their experience and help students begin building their own careers in the field.”
Launched in fall 2025, Friends of HLPI brings together alumni and practicing health law attorneys to support mentorship, professional networking and philanthropic engagement. Following its inaugural networking event last spring, the organization established the Friends of HLPI and UHLC Professional Mentoring Program, which pairs J.D. and LL.M. students with experienced health law attorneys for a yearlong mentoring relationship based on practice interests, career goals and other preferences. The students receive guidance on career planning, networking, job searches and professional development.
National Jurist also highlighted the Kirk L. Dobbins American Health Law Association Travel Scholarship, established by alumnus Kirk Dobbins (J.D. ’93), vice president and regional counsel for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals. The award covers registration, hotel and airfare for UHLC students attending the American Health Law Association’s Fundamentals of Health Law Conference. The inaugural recipients of the award are Nai-Yu Chen, an LL.M. student, and Suzanne Adams, a 3L. Both will attend conference Nov. 1–3 in Chicago.
“Together, Friends of HLPI and the Dobbins Scholarship reflect HLPI’s broader commitment to helping students build connections with the practitioners and professional communities that will support their development as health law professionals,” Mantel said.
