University of Houston Law Center students Kelly Rae Ferrell, 2L, and Maryann Zaki, 3L, have been awarded $2,500 and $3,500 scholarships, respectively, from the Association of Women Attorneys - Houston. Ferrell and Zaki were recognized for their commitment to excellence and an aptitude for leadership and philanthropy.
"The group of students who were chosen to receive the AWA scholarship are incredibly inspiring and successful, and it is a huge honor to be considered among them," Ferrell said "One of the traits shared by each of the scholarship recipients was a dedication to community service while maintaining academic success. I think that the scholarship's focus on this balance is really important, and I intend to continue to make a commitment to service while in law school and post-graduation."
The scholarships were awarded at the AWA 2013 Premier Women in the Law Luncheon on March 20. AWA is a non-profit organization of attorneys, judges, and law students who are interested in promoting women and the interests of women in Houston's legal community. Ferrell and Zaki will also receive a free AWA membership for one year.
"The scholarship means a lot to me because I recently became a member of AWA, and I fully support their mission," Zaki said. "AWA really makes an effort to encourage the mentoring of young women within the legal profession. Upon graduation, I hope to continue to be active within the AWA community, while serving as a friend and mentor to other young women who are considering pursuing a career in the law."
Zaki is a Senior Articles Editor of the Houston Journal of Health Law & Policy and is Vice Chair of Outreach on the Moot Court Board. She is also an intern for The Honorable Judge Gray Miller. Upon graduation, she will be joining the litigation practice at Looper Reed & McGraw.
Ferrell is the Senior Notes & Comments Editor of the Houston Law Review. She has interned for The Honorable Judge David Hittner. She also serves as a teaching and research assistant.
