August 19, 2025 - The 2025 Meta Rankings have placed the University of Houston Law Center’s Houston Law Review at No. 51 out of 191 in the nation, rising two spots from last year.

This ranking makes it the second-highest ranked law review in Texas, behind the University of Texas Law Review at No. 18

“This ranking is a testament to more than six decades of student-led excellence and the long arc of institutional and alumni support that helped build the journal’s reputation,” said UH Law Center Dean Leonard M. Baynes. “From its humble beginnings to its national standing, the Houston Law Review embodies the ambition, discipline, expertise, and thoughtfulness we aim to instill in all our students.”

The Meta-Rankings are published by associate professor Bryce Clayton Newell at the University of Oregon. He ranks approximately 200 different flagship law reviews across the country every year, determining their place based on the Washington & Lee Law Journal ranking, Google Scholar Metrics ranking, U.S. News Peer Reputation score, and U.S. News average 10-year overall school ranking.

Newell decided to create a meta-ranking [to gauge] the relative importance of journals, adding that “this approach benefits from incorporating a couple of different forms of impact evaluation while not disregarding the general sentiment that law school’s ‘prestige’,” according to a recent blog post.

The Houston Law Review was founded in 1963 and in its early years, the journal built its reputation with contributions from UH Law faculty and the Houston legal community. Over time, it drew submissions from nationally renowned scholars, judges, and lawyers. Today, the Houston Law Review is known for its scholarship and programming, including signature events such as the Frankel Lecture Series, which brings prominent national speakers and leading scholars from across the country to the Law Center.

“This recognition is all about the incredible dedication and talent of our board members,” said the review’s Managing Editor Nadia Posluszny, a 3L at UH Law. “I am so proud of the countless hours they have invested in producing high-quality scholarship, supporting our authors, and maintaining the highest editorial standards. This accomplishment reflects not only their hard work, but also the collaborative spirit and commitment to excellence that defines the Houston Law Review.”

Over its 60-year history, the Houston Law Review has earned numerous honors, including five Texas Bar Foundation’s Outstanding Law Review Article Awards, the Joan Garfinkel Glantz Award, the Jones Day Award and the Susan Godfrey L.L.P. Award. Board 63 is composed of 36 members, while the incoming Board 64 will include 41 members, continuing the tradition of student-led excellence that has defined the journal since its founding.
