Houston Law Review Rises in National Rankings, Maintains No. 2 Position in Texas
— The University of Houston Law Center’s Houston Law Review continued to climb among the nation’s leading legal publications, showing substantial gains in the most recent Washington and Lee University School of Law Journal rankings.
Released July 15, the 2025 Washington and Lee rankings list the Houston Law Review at #52, a jump of 20 points from #72 a year ago. It also improved its standing among student-edited publications, rising to #50 from #70, and #42 (from #51) among flagship, in-print law reviews. Statewide, it continues to hold the #2 spot, behind the Texas Law Review.
“These rankings reflect the hard work of our student editors and excellence of the legal scholarship published in the Houston Law Review,” said Ryan J. Dailey, editor in chief of the Law Review and a 3L student at UHLC. “We are proud to continue building the journal’s national reputation and are excited for the year ahead.”
The rankings are compiled annually by the Washington and Lee University School of Law Library and are widely used by legal scholars, authors, editors and academic administrators to assess the influence of legal journals. The rankings are based on citations in law reviews and court opinions over a five-year period and use a combined score that weighs both impact factor and total citations.
Founded in 1963, the Houston Law Review has published influential scholarship from leading academics, judges and practitioners for more than six decades and earned several accolades, including five Texas Bar Foundation’s Outstanding Law Review Article Awards, the Joan Garfinkel Glantz Award, the Jones Day Award and the Susan Godfrey L.L.P. Award. The student-run publication also hosts programs, including the annual Frankel Lecture Series, which brings distinguished legal scholars and thought leaders to the UH Law Center.
